Vivid Autumn Birch Tree Leaves

I did a little garden safari this morning and noticed the wide range of colours there were on the leaves of my Silver Birch trees. Although the majority of leaves were still in the green, there was a wide spectrum of everything from a nice apple green, to lime yellow to sunflower yellow, to golden to a burnt-ochre to a deep chestnutty burnt-sienna brown and even leaves with a mix of all these in one!

I photographed the most interesting and hand drew and the most interesting, a tri-colour one and a green one just starting to colour up, with Polychromos coloured pencils.

I noticed the changes all seemed to start from circular or oval centres and wondered why that might be? Could it be something to do with the way plant cellular structures breakdown perhaps…?
